The Romantic Hero in Goethes Faust Essay -- Papers Essays Goethe Faus

The Romantic Hero in Goethe's Faust Works Cited Not Included Long hailed as the watershed of Romantic literature, Goethe’s Faust uses the misadventures of its hero to parallel the challenges that pervaded European society in the dynamic years of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Faust is the prototypical Romantic hero because the transformation of his attitudes mirrors the larger transformation that was occurring in the society in which Goethe conceived the play. Faust’s odyssey transports him from adherence to the cold rationale of the Enlightenment to a passion for the pleasures that came to define the Romantic spirit. Faust not only expresses the moral contradictions and spiritual yearnings of a man in search of fulfillment, but also portrays the broader mindset of a society that was groping for meaning in a world where reason no longer sufficed as a catalyst for human cultural life. The period of German Romanticism in which Goethe wrote Faust was plagued with the same intrinsic turmoil that Faust himself felt prior to making his deal with Mephisto. The destruction that the French Revolution had exacted on the European consciousness was evident in the attitudes of the people most touched by the tumult of the era – people who came to realize that absolution was no longer a pertinent intellectual goal. The cold rationale of the Enlightenment was no longer adequate to explain the significance of life in a society where everything had so recently been turned upside down. Romanticism was the expression of this society’s craving for answers and fulfillment. Everywhere, people embraced life passionately and lived as... ...emption, despite her sins, because â€Å"all her crime was love† (line 4501). Goethe’s Faust is a work in which a new type of hero emerges to satisfy the needs of a changing society. With Faust, Goethe succeeded in representing a microcosm of the tensions that accompanied the shift from rationalism to Romanticism. Complex and dynamic, Faust, like the great men of his era, is a hero whose most notable achievement is his transformation of the lives of others as well as his own. In this respect, the lesson of the Romantic hero is comprised less of romance than of utility. Following the trends of the Goethe’s contemporary evolving society, the means by which Faust succeeds in accomplishing his goals are largely selfish, brutal, and unethical. This is perhaps Goethe’s single greatest reflection on the modern nature of heroism.

History of the Malaysian Constitution Essay

The foundation of the Constitution of Malaysia was laid on 10 September 1877. It began with the first meeting of the Council of State in Perak, where the British first started to assert their influence in the Malay states. Under the terms of the Pangkor Engagement of 1874 between the Sultan of Perak and the British, the Sultan was obliged to accept a British Resident. Hugh Low, the second British Resident, convinced the Sultan to set up advisory Council of State, the forerunner of the state legislative assembly. Similar Councils were constituted in the other Malay states as and when they came under British protection. Originally playing an advisory role, the function of the council was later extended to include both legislative and executive functions. This continued until 1948 when the Federation of Malaya was formed by two agreements, namely the State Agreement and the Federation of Malaya Agreement. The State Agreement was of great significance to Malaysia’s constitutional development. By virtue of this agreement, the Malay Rulers with the advice and concurrence of the traditional chiefs and elders of the states promulgated their respective State Constitutions except for Johor and Terengganu where Constitutions had already been in place since 1895 and 1911 respectively. The Rulers were also required to distinguish the legislative power in their respective states from the executive power, by constituting a legislative body, called the Council of State and State Executive Council whose advice he was required to obtained. The Federation of Malaya Agreement that served as the core for the current federal system of central government was concluded as a compromise to the much-opposed Malayan Union. The Federation consisted of the Federated Malay States (FMS), the Unfederated Malay States and the Straits Settlements of Penang and Melaka. The FMS consisted of Perak, Selangor, Pahang and Negeri Sembilan while the non-FMS were Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Terengganu and Johor. The federal government comprised the High Commissioner, an Executive Council and Legislative Council. The agreement also provided for a Conference of Rulers with its own elected chairman. Each of the states had its own Executive Council and Council of States to deal with all matters not specifically reserved to the Federation. The Federal Government was responsible for defence, the police, and the railways, labour, broadcasting, post and finance. This 1948 Constitution remained in force with some essential amendments, until 1957 when the Federation of Malaya gained its ndependence. A constitutional conference was held in London from 18 January to 6 February 1956 when the British promised Independence and self-government to the Federation of Malaya. It was attended by a delegation from the Federation of Malaya, consisting of four representatives of the Malay Rulers, the Chief Minister of the Federation (Tunku Abdul Rahman) and three other ministers, and also by the British High Commissioner in Malaya and his advisers. 1] The conference proposed the appointment of a commission to devise a constitution for a fully self-governing and independent Federation of Malaya. [2] This proposal was accepted by Queen Elizabeth II and the Malay Rulers. Accordingly, pursuant to such agreement, the Reid Commission, consisting of constitutional experts from fellow Commonwealth countries and headed by Lord William Reid, a distinguished Lord-of-Appeal-in-Ordinary, was appointed to make recommendations for a suitable constitution. The report of the Commission was completed on 11 February 1957. The report was then examined by a working party appointed by the British Government, the Conference of Rulers and the Government of the Federation of Malaya and the Federal Constitution was enacted on the basis of its recommendations. [4] The Constitution came into force on 27 August 1957 but formal independence was only achieved on 31 August however. The constitutional machinery devised to bring the new constitution into force consisted of: In the United Kingdom, the Federation of Malaya Independence Act 1957, together with the Orders in Council made under it. The Federation of Malaya Independence Act, 1957 passed by the British Parliament gave parliamentary approval to Her Britannic Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to terminate her sovereignty and jurisdiction in respect of the Straits Settlements of Melaka and Penang and all powers and jurisdiction in respect of the Malay States or the Federation as a whole. The Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957, made on 5 August 1957 between the British High Commissioner on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II and the Malay Rulers. The Agreement contained the new Constitution of the Federation of Malaya (and the new constitutions of Penang and Melaka). In the Federation, the Federal Constitution Ordinance 1957, passed on 27 August 1957 by the Federal Legislative Council of the Federation of Malaya formed under the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1948. The new constitutions of the Federation as well as Penang and Melaka were given the force of law by the Ordinance. In each of the Malay states, State Enactments, and in Melaka and Penang, resolutions of the State Legislatures, approving and giving force of law to the federal constitution. The Federal Constitution was significantly amended when Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore joined the Federation to form Malaysia in 1963.

Australian And Chinese Health Care Health And Social Care Essay

There are different wellness attention systems around the universe, such as Australian and Chinese wellness attention systems. Over the old ages Australia has faced turning demands on wellness support because of technological alterations, turning patient outlooks and an aging population. The Australian Government financess pharmaceuticals ( PBS ) and cosmopolitan medical services known as Medicare, they besides provide fiscal aid to public infirmaries, aged attention installations for the aged. The new Australian Government elected this twelvemonth will confront issues in the support and bringing of wellness attention. Internationally Australia ‘s wellness attention system ranks good, as Australia has low rate of infant mortality and high mean life anticipation. It is now a job as the wellness system is under force per unit area because of ageing population, the increasing of chronic unwellness ( because of fleshiness ) , and the wellness service administration is acquiring out dated. There are people that are advantaged and disadvantaged in wellness attention, and they remind wellness suppliers and the authorities that there can be no room for satisfaction, in respects to Australia ‘s wellness attention system. During the past 20 old ages China has undergone rapid alteration with a displacement from a planned socialist economic system to a state with more market influences [ 11 ] , and therefore a turning non authorities wellness attention sector [ 12 ] frequently in footings of little patterns outside the infirmary [ 13 ] . The Chinese authorities has made economic development a top precedence, at the disbursal of public wellness ( lift entree to wellness attention for the 800 million people populating in rural countries ) . The major alterations are the turning inequality in entree to wellness attention, increasing costs of medical attention, and the diminution of preventative programmes in some countries [ 15 ] . There is a demand to reorganize the public wellness system by beef uping connexions between the assorted public wellness administrations [ 14 ] . The Chinese authorities has progressively recognised the importance of puting in wellness, and bettering wellness attention services has become a cardinal component in economic development programs. China is besides confronting jobs that are apparent in Australia. This is because of increasing economic growing, alterations in life style that are now act uponing the form of wellness and diseases [ 16 ] . China besides has a big aged population, but unlike Australia China has a policy of one kid per household and no aged attention by the authorities like Australia supplying aged attention installations. It is therefore of involvement to compare the influences on the administration of wellness attention of a quickly altering society, as in China, with Australia and its comparatively unchanged construction despite social alterations.DiscussionAustralia has an country of 7,692,024 kilometers squared with a population of 22,446,815, which means 3 people per square kilometer. While China has a population of 1,328,474,000 on an country of 9598094 square kilometer covering 7.2 people per square metre. China holding such a large population requires much more support and installation to suit the population. Therefore, Organisations within the Chinese wellness service are divided into different degrees to let them to run better, but this besides introduces some common issues. Many jobs beset the Chinese wellness service is the irrational collocation of wellness resources, unjust privileges, the hold in implementing wellness steps in the countryside, and deficiency of authorities committedness to wellness. The development of basic wellness service administrations faces unprecedented challenges. In some towns, wellness forces are merely paid the basic pay, and sometimes this can non be paid on clip, which reduces the enthusiasm of wellness workers. The major issues faced by the Australian wellness attention systems are the support of modern engineering, in order to purchase new equipments, money is needed which will come from increased revenue enhancement. The willingness of physicians and other wellness professionals to work drawn-out hours has diminished as the wellness work force ages, and as persons seek to equilibrate work and household life. There are serious deficits of general practicians, tooth doctors, nurses and some cardinal allied wellness workers. Deficits are more important in outer metropolitan, rural and distant parts, particularly in Autochthonal communities, and in peculiar countries of attention, such as mental wellness, aged attention, and disablement attention. Access to wellness services is going less just. Another of import issue is that the patients ‘ out-of-pocket costs have grown 50 % in the past decennary and now, for some, show a ample barrier to needed attention. In Australia, most of the duty for wellness attention is by the federal authorities, in contrast to China where cardinal authorities has the chief duty. In China the entire wellness outgo is still increasing, from 74.4 billion in 1990, 202.6 in 2001 to 342 billion in 2006, while the cost in Australia is about 103.2 billion in 2008. Therefore, with great outgo rate, China is still considered as a state under development. China besides has a low gross domestic merchandise ( GDP ) of 4.5 % , whereas Australia has a GDP of 9.4 % significance Australia has a higher economic end product towards wellness attention. The Australian Health and Medical Service Act gives patients many rights and chances to act upon their attention through audience with wellness attention staff, while Chinese wellness statute law focuses on the rule of keeping patients ‘ independency but does non hold a particular jurisprudence to protect patients ‘ rights. Chinese patients have limited rights, for illustration, in the pick of intervention, but the jurisprudence besides states duties of the patients, e.g. cooperation with the physician in diagnosing and intervention, paying for medical intervention, detecting ordinances prescribed by infirmaries, etc. Therefore, the attitude of wellness attention staff to patients in Australia is based on a humane and understanding attitude towards each person, while in China the accent is on keeping the patient ‘s independency, and altering the construct of the wellness service from intervention to bar. In both states the focal point has changed from a biomedical to a bio-psycho-social theoretical account, with a more holistic position of the person, and from intervention inside to outside the infirmary. However, in Australia the development of quality confidence has progressed farther as a consequence of the higher developmental degree.DecisionIn decision, the analysed wellness attention systems showed unsimilarities in statute law, administration, and finance, but the two systems are based on similar critical premises, i.e. , uniting managerial-organisational efficiency with the humanitarian-egalitarian ends of wellness attention, and both of them are continuously determined to supply better wellness attention for all, but in a point of position Australian health-care services are good organised and good financed. Through international comparings, new attacks in the field of wellness attention can be found, and appropriate modern steps can be adopted in order to accomplish greater economic systems and more effectual programmes to back up the population.

IT Project Management Assessment Essay

1. Summarizes how the project manager or team exhibited exceptional and ethical project management practices. Often, the project manager (PM) is faced with an issue that is not easily resolved by theory or the knowledge acquired from formal training. These types of problems are usually not of a technical nature and more often tend to be ethical or human resource issues (Stare, 2011). The satisfactory answer is often debatable and may suit one set of circumstances and yet not another. It is these difficult issues where the PM must draw from their practical experiences, moral and ethical obligations, and sometimes the rule of law. For example, international projects take the PM out of the comfort zone of the local laws and customs that they are used to working at home. In many host countries, doing business results in uncertainty and inconsistencies from the way business is conducted at home. Sometimes a practice that is permissible in the foreign country is not at home (Stare, 2011). Will making a payment to a foreign government official to obtain permits, licenses or police protection be seen as a bribe or just facilitating and expediting to get things done? That is why it is useful to have a set of guidelines. Companies should have a set of best practices or code of conduct to assist them, however, many do not. Here is a list of questions to use and may be proven useful in deciding a correct approach: Are you following rules that are generally understood and accepted for the task taking place? For example, in poker, bluffing is accepted as part of the game. Are you comfortable publicly discussing and defending your action? Would you be comfortable if your friends were aware of it? Is your family ok with it? Would you want someone to do it to you or to your family? What if everyone acted that way? Would the resulting society be desirable? Are their alternatives that rest on firmer ground? Some countries such as the U.S. have a legal framework, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) for conducting business abroad. For instance, it states with respect to bribery that it is a crime for a bribe to be made to a foreign official or political party for the purpose of obtaining or retaining business or for directing business to another person even if this flows through an intermediary or consultant (Quade, Birkenkrahe, & Habermann, 2012). However, not all payments are defined as bribes. Payments for routine government action are allowed under the FCPA including the dispensing of permits, licenses and police protection as noted in the example. Thus, it is important to distinguish between those that are acceptable and unacceptable by noting the various laws of both your own country and those in your host country. As organizations increasingly adopt the practice of project management to achieve their goals, project managers must be adept in the soft skills, political savvy, and conflict management skills that are vital to project success. Project success relies directly on the ability of project managers to communicate, negotiate, and influence within a project environment that inevitably involves politics and conflict (KENNEDY & HUSTON, 2012). It is important for the project manager to approach difficult issues with care and conduct their affairs within the appropriate ethical and legal framework. Some of the PM guiding principles are gained from the company value statements, and codes of conduct. This will provide the project manager, along with his or her experience, the additional resources to resolve tough situations. 2. Discusses the role of the project manager or team, the organizational setting, the recipient’s approach to project integration management, and obstacles that had the potential of adversely impacting the triple constraints. Some of us are familiar with the term, triple constraint, which refers to the three way conflict between scope, time, and cost. The constraint is often represented diagrammatically by a triangle. What the diagram attempts to show is that if something change in any constraint it should impact the other two constraints in some way. For example, if you increase the scope of a project, this will have the effect of increasing the time taken and thus the cost of the project (DiVincenzo, 2006). Also, if you reduce the time taken, but you are not prepared to reduce the scope, then clearly it’s going to cost more to complete the project. Triple constraint is one of the least understood, but most important keys to understand in project management. The discipline of project management is about providing the tools and techniques that enable the project team and not just the project manager to organize the work to meet the constraints. Another tactic to project management is to consider the three constraints as finance, time and human resources. If you need to finish a job in a shorter time, you can throw more people at the problem, which in turn will raise the cost of the project, unless by doing this task quicker you will reduce costs elsewhere in the project by an equal amount. A project management graphic aid, which is a triangle, can show time, scope, and cost objective as the sides of a triangle, instead of the corners. Project management could used a pair of triangles called triangle outer and triangle inner to represent the concept that the intent of a project is to complete on or before the allowed time, on or under cost, and to meet or exceed the required scope (Anantatmula, 2010). The distance between the inner and outer triangles shows the hedge or possibility for each of the three elements. Bias could be shown by the distance. The example of a project with a strong time bias was the Alaska pipeline which essentially had to be done on time no matter the cost. After years of development, oil flowed out the end of the pipe within four minutes of schedule. The illustration of the time side of triangle inner was effective on the top of the triangle outer line. This was true of the scope objective line also. The cost line of triangle inner, however, was outside since the project ran significantly over budget. This is a good relationship of Performance, Cost, Time, Scope, and shows that a project can pick any three. Projects and initiatives are more likely to meet objectives and achieve success when change management and project management are being both used and integrated (DiVincenzo, 2006). An integrated approach increases the effectiveness of project delivery and increases the chances that sustained change happens. Integration of change management and project management enables the practitioners doing the work to be more aligned, the activities to be more effectively sequenced and the tools being used to be even stronger. Regardless of the specific approach to integrating people, processes, tools and methodologies, integration of change management and project management will provide a more complete approach and solution to creating sustained and meaningful change in the organization. Three Gorges Dam Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Three Gorges Dam - Essay Example The whole project is generally a hydroelectric engineering power generator constructed along Yangtze River; the longest river in China which runs across half of the land, horizontally into the Pacific. The project is the world’s biggest power station as far as installed capacity (22,500MW) is concerned. In addition, Three Gorges Dam is the 2nd biggest functional hydroelectric project in regard to annual energy production, generating in 2012 over 98.1Twh plus 83.7 Twh last year (Trouw, 2014). The idea of building a huge dam on River Yangtze was initially the brainchild of Sun Yat-Sen in 1919.He envisioned a dam with a capacity of producing 22 GW of power being feasible downstream Three Gorges. The government, in 1932, under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek started preliminary plans on the Three Gorges. Japanese military occupied Yichang in 1939 and began surveying the area. The Otani plan design for the dam was finished in expectation of a possible defeat of China by Japanese. Engineer John Savage of US bureau of reclamation in 1944 designed a proposal of the dam project paving way for 54 Chinese engineers to leave for US to receive specialized training. The initial concept was for the dam to be utilized for unique movement of ships; however the project was stopped in 1947 due to Chinese Civil war. The project was in 1949 supported by Mao Zedong, though he started Gezhouba Dam. The idea would re-emerge in 1980s and finally the approval came from the National People†™s Congress in 1992.Construction of the dam started in earnest in 14th of December 1994 and was expected to be complete and fully operational by 2009.However, additional projects like the underground power facility with 6 extra generators delayed complete operations till the May of 2012(Trouw, 2014). The project has come with its own share of controversy. In 1958, for instance, engineers who spoke negatively

Petroleum Development of Oman Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Petroleum Development of Oman - Assignment Example The Company's contribution towards training Omani Citizens has been phenomenal and is a part of the shared vision of an educated and qualified Oman as conceived by his Excellency the Sultan. In the aftermath of the World War II, the race for global market leadership has taken an aggressive outlook. Since the first ever discovery of oil in the Middle East the competition in the region is getting fierce and huge investments are being directed towards the exploitation of the so called 'Black Gold'-a name once used for Afro-American slaves. Under these circumstances firms are analyzing every nook and corner of their operation and investing millions of dollars on improving their strategies in the pursuit of a competitive advantage. Employees are no longer mere workers but a core human resource which is being greatly invested upon. Trends in employee training have shown an upward shift in the past decade and a huge budget is being spent on it, in the meantime with the advent of increasingly sophisticated technology training is no longer a choice but a need. Omani Government realizes that in order to achieve the conceived goals of development it is significant for the workforce of the most productive sector, Petroleum, to be motivated. And a key aspect of motivation as identified by the experts of Human Resource Management is Employee Training. With this view in mind PDO under the surveillance of the Sultan is making huge monetary investments for reshaping its workforce. Technical expertise has been imported from the Western World to meet this end and importance is being attached to the coaching of the mechanical staff in view of the future prospects. Emphasis on English and IT Training to employees is a growing trend in PDO and worker welfare programs appealing to different employee groups are being introduced consistently. Developments in this context include the Training to Young Omanis (TYO) program for young graduates and the Omani Technician Training Program (OTTP) for field technicians. An interesting aspect that can be highlighted in the above mentioned programs is the emphasis laid on the training in English and IT departments irrespective of the employee rank and needs. PDO recognizes English and IT proficiency as the traits necessary for the 21st Century employee and it therefore emphasizes on training its employees in these courses. Moreover the stress on English Language training can also understood from the fact that English is the global language. It is understood and spoken even in areas where it is not native thus in order to go worldwide it is pre-eminent that PDO' s workforce should have a solid grasp on the English Language so as to readily communicate with its foreign customers and trainers. In the meantime the lack of technical expertise available in Oman calls for the import of talent from abroad. This would ultimately mean the inflow of foreigners who would be incapable of speaking or understanding the local language. Thus the only

With all these, the company benefits from the general performance of all the activities that is relevant in integrating all the branches of the company for a worthy cause. How Policy Developments in the European Union Affect the Company There are several policies that govern the trade in the European Union. These policies affect every aspect of the trade and are therefore helpful in creation of healthy trade factors in the region. The policies that are regulated in the union are broad-based but serve very specific purposes. The policies touch on areas that deal with integration of the market, available opportunities, and the effects of the political economy and venture laws into the international markets (Clarke & Morgan, 2006, p. 33). Integration and Competition Policies The integration policies in the union have had a big market influence in the market. There are some countries that have high stake integration than others. For instance, some countries in the eastern part of Europe do not have a direct relationship with those in the west. Therefore, the companies with a base in either region do not enjoy all the rights associated with closeness. The level of competition therefore is not as creative as it
